Songkran is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Sankrant’ meaning “astrological passage”.

Celebrated as the traditional Thai New Year, Songkran is the longest holiday in Thailand and lasts from 13th April 2014 to 15th April 2014.

The celebration of Songkran is incomplete without splashing water on others. The ‘water fight’ is one of the main highlights of this festival. Armed with water guns and water containers, travelers and natives including children throw water on others. This festival symbolises cleansing, purification and rejuvenating.

People also visit Buddhist temples to pay homage to monks. Buddha statues are cleansed by gently pouring scented water. The Thais believe this will bring them luck and prosperity.

Among all cities, Bangkok is one of the top favourites to celebrate Songkran, followed by Chiang Mai, Pattaya and Phuket.
