Now imagine thousands of stars lying in your path, how pretty would that sight be? The Van Gogh Bicycle path in Eindhoven, Netherlands looks like something straight out of a dream with soft glow lights illuminating the way.
The path is inspired by Vincent Van Gogh’s famous painting The Starry Night. It pays homage to the artist and opened just in time for the 125th death anniversary of Van Gogh.

Now if you take a look, you will notice that it has swirls of lights along the path. This feat was achieved by artist and double-letter enthusiast Daan Roosegaarde. He installed a number of stones covered in a special smart coating that soaks up solar rays during the day and glow for hours after the sun goes down. The treated stones were cemented into place in swirls and whorls that match the celestial whirlpools depicted in Van Gogh’s painting. At full charge, the glowing path emits a strong blue-green glow, painting bikers and hikers in a soft, but eerie light.
This project will promote the use of sustainable energy and in turn, sustainable tourism. It is a part of the Smart Highway project which experiments and promotes new energy solutions for public works.
So what are you waiting for? If Netherlands didn’t appeal to you before, it sure will now!
