In the pages of history

Officially known as Shaheed Bhagat Singh Marg, Colaba Causeway was built by the British East Indian Company and was declared a cantonment area in 1796. This is also where horse-drawn tram cars were first introduced. Take a walk around Colaba for some beautiful Victorian architecture. The famous Taj Mahal hotel is located by the promenade. The Golden Dragon, at the Taj, which opened in 1973, was the first to introduce Indians to Sichuan cuisine. Other firsts include Indigo (1998), the first chef-owned, fine-dining restaurant in Mumbai, Cafe Basilico (2001), the first all-day European bistro-style restaurant and Theobroma (2004), a sit-down, patisserie-café.

What to buy in Colaba

Chunky neck pieces, whacky hair accessories, colourful Kolhapuri chappals, leather bags and jackets. Funky outfits, handicrafts, brass items and aromatherapy items.

Price range

Rs. 300 upwards; but be sure to brandish your bargaining skills for a good deal.

What to eat while shopping at Colaba Causeway

Delicious Mughlai street food at Bade Miyan, especially their succulent kebabs; Beer and Mondy’s Steak Boti at Cafe Mondegar; Salads and quick snacks like Gambas Pil Pil at Cafe Leopold; Melt-in-the-mouth chaat at Kailash Parbat.
