There are loads of great volunteering opportunities around the Great Barrier Reef that will leave you with wonderful holiday memories, as well as that positive feeling volunteering gives you. By Lauren Esplin

Here’s a taste of the best volunteering activities the Great Barrier Reef has to offer:

Assist coral research with dives around the Great Barrier Reef

Are you a certified SCUBA diver or snorkeler? If your answer is yes, volunteering at the Great Barrier Reef is the perfect volunteer activity for you. The Great Barrier Reef is home to the largest coral reefs in the world with around 400 types of coral.

Earthwatch organises teams to identify coral that contain fluorescent proteins, which are largely needed in medical research, specifically for AIDS, Alzheimer’s disease, and cancer.  The volunteer program also focuses on monitoring the health of the precious coral.

Help save sea turtles by working with Sea Grass Watch

The number of sea turtles around the Great Barrier Reef has decreased drastically in the last few decades. By spending part of your holiday with the Mackay and District Turtle Watch you can make a difference. A large part of this volunteering involves patience, as you’ll be monitoring and collecting data in regards to the nesting activities of 30 to 100 flatback female turtles.

There is also a week long Cape York Turtle Rescue camp in the north of Queensland, Australia where you stay in an Aboriginal community and work with Aboriginal rangers tagging and measuring the nesting of turtles. You’ll also do volunteering activities like removing fishing nets from the beach and collecting data. And on your off time this volunteering trip gives you the opportunity to meet the Aboriginal Elders of Mapoon and you may be lucky enough to hear a dreamtime story.

Protect endangered wallabies in the Great Barrier Reef

When we think of animals in the Great Barrier Reef it’s easy to only focus on the marine life; however the rare wallabies in the Avocet Nature Reserve, Australia are also in need of your protection.

Your role as a volunteer for GVI (Global Vision International) will involve working on a recovery plan for the Flashjack wallaby. Specifically you’ll trap Flashjacks for monitoring, help with their pre-release feeding (and the actual release) and set and monitor sand plots. A highlight for many volunteers is the opportunity to see koalas and kangaroos in their natural habitat. But be warned there is no electricity or internet at camp, so be ready for a rustic volunteer experience.

One of the most rewarding travel experiences hands down is volunteering. You’ll get close to nature, meet the locals and take away memories to last a lifetime. Every little bit helps!

If you want to have a taste of underwater experience but cannot muster the courage to go snorkeling, this kind of eco-trip will be the right one for you. Mardi Gras in the first Saturday in March, Sydney stops for spectacular costume and parade. The city enjoys a favorable climate throughout the year.
