2015, The Year That Was: Hybrid Hotels, A New Breed Of Accommodation From Cox & Kings
Being a travel company, we at Cox and Kings always believe in providing innovative and educational holidays for our guests. In fact, we always try to keep a keen eye out for any changes in travel preferences, increase in the number of tourists to a particular destination or even a sudden increase in preference for a certain type of hotel, so that we can tailor our holidays to meet the change in trends.
Over the past year, we witnessed the evolution of a new trend where travellers were increasingly looking at not the regular uptight hotels, but hotels that would provide the warmth and comfort of a home. Keeping the changing preferences of our customers in mind, we added a new breed of accommodation to our kitty that primarily caters to travellers looking for a home away from home.
Aiming to be the urban traveller’s home, we designed the Meininger hotels. These hotels are the perfect example of hybrid accommodation—providing the combined experience of the social environment of a hostel, with the amenities and privacy of a budget hotel. Similar to generic hostels, all of our Meininger hotels promote a communal and social environment by featuring guest kitchens, game zones or lounges that are easily converted into bars or breakfast rooms, an aspect that is exceptional for a commercial hotel. The kitchens are well-equipped and also come with a washing machine and a dryer. In all of our Meininger hotels, we have added dedicated public spaces where guests are encouraged to mingle.
Present in 10 European cities, these hotels offer the perfect version of privacy, with a combination of regular and dormitory style rooms. In order to provide the comfort of a home, we have designed the rooms with a flexible structure, wherein, depending on the traveller’s budget, the guest can choose to stay in multi-bedded rooms or in their own private room. The bedrooms range from traditional double rooms to rooms with multiple beds. The dormitories and come with their own TV, free Wi-Fi and en-suite bathrooms. This flexibility also allows us to effectively accommodate all types of guests ranging from school groups, business travellers, individual guests, families and tour groups.
As part of being an urban traveller’s home, we have also ensured that the hotels are centrally located and close to major tourist attractions and near main public transport points. Guests can treat the hotels as a pit-stop for exploring the host city and move on to different parts of the city. This was why last year we selected an old medical centre in Rome to lease as the building was situated a mere 500 meters away from Rome’s main train station, Termini. It is also within walking distance of museums and the main tourist attractions of the city. After the hotel becomes operational, guests can simply step out of the hotel and enjoy a walking tour of the beautiful historic city or catch a train and head off to another part of Italy altogether.
