A ‘gift-bag’ worked like a charm for Alakananda Ghosh’s daughters

It’s time to bring out some out-of-the-box and novel ideas when thinking of entertainment options for kids, especially during long trips. Pune-based Alakananda Ghosh, who works with Child Rights and You (CRY), thought of creating ‘gift bags’ for her two daughters (aged 9 and 4.5 years) on their last trip.

It had the usual stuff, colouring material, modelling clay, colouring books and was meant to be given to the kids as a surprise if they behaved well on the train journey.

“Some would call it a bribe, but we like to think of it as an incentive, where the child not only gets something to keep herself entertained, but also learns a valuable lesson that things aren’t free and one has to earn them,” elaborate Ghosh and her husband, Aninda Sardar.

Colouring books is one of the things you can add to the ‘gift bag’ when travelling with slightly older kids

It helps that both the girls are majorly into books, and buying books at the airport and railway station is a ritual that they look forward to. “We also try to pick hotels that have access to a swimming pool and a play area so that they can work their extra energies out,” add the couple.

It’s an unstated Murphy’s law that even the best eaters will turn into fussy ones during trips. One could either spend the holiday running after the little tyke with a plate in tow or tackle the challenge patiently, armed with a certain amount of edible ammunition from home.

Travel With Kids: Expert Tip From The Parents

Mumbai-based mompreneur Pooja Trehan Dhamecha recently completed a 15-day road trip with her husband Tarun and son Shlok (aged 2.5 years). “Toddlers are always fussy when taken away from their comfort zones. We have learnt, over the past couple of years, that it’s best not to fuss over your child’s appetite,” she shares.

A healthy lunch box packed with some of your child’s favourite goodies will always work!

However, she makes sure to carry some goodies like biscuits, cream ones or plain like Parle G, home-cooked parathas, cheese slices, on a trip. “When he was younger, we would have our bags bustling with Cerelac, milk powder, sweet ragi, roasted and powdered dal and rice that could be cooked instantly with hot water,” says Dhamecha. “Additionally, we kept a track of his meals, and thus plan our break accordingly to feed him, maybe a glass of milk.”

3. Tips For Traveling With Kids: Tackle Illness Head-On

Manika Bassi Giri suggests to always have your pediatrician’s number is on speed dial

Fevers, tummy aches and cough don’t come with a prior intimation. Seeing a child unwell can cause even the most stoic of moms to panic, but a certain amount of foresight and sensible packing can ease away a lot of fears.

Travel With Kids: Expert Tip From The Parents

“Foreseeing a medical emergency is most important and I keep medicines for fever, cough, diarrhoea and stomach ache with me at all times,” says Delhi-based Manika Bassi Giri, who works from home for a Singapore-based PR firm. “My daughter (aged 3 years) catches cold easily, so I also carry a steamer and nasal saline drops as well. And moreover, her pediatrician’s number is on my speed dial.”

Regina George carried light summer clothes for a summer holiday in Ooty, but the weather was cold and windy!

Kids not having the right kind of clothes to wear is a common travel complaint. Regina Anthony faced this numerous times too! For a holiday in Ooty in the peak of summer, she carried light summer clothes at the insistence of the hotel staff, who assured me that it would be breezy and pleasant. The weather, however, turned out to be cold and windy!

Light cotton dresses, shorts and vests are perfect for kids on a beach holiday

“Once I reached there. I had to pack my 4-year-old daughter in a lot of my clothes for the remainder of the trip”. Therefore, research is most important. “For me, comfort is king. Kids need to be comfortable when they are travelling anywhere,” says Regina. “So, for beach holidays, take lots of light cotton dresses, shorts and vests. And don’t forget those sun hats.”

For a long road trip, she packs in loose pyjamas and cotton t-shirts that her daughters (aged 5 and 2.5 years) can sleep in. “Same goes for international holidays,” she adds.

5. Tips For Traveling With Kids: The Suitcase

Kiran Mukul always follows the ‘travel light’ mantra

It doesn’t matter how old your children are, their suitcases will always be overflowing with knick-knacks that suddenly acquire almost lifeline-like importance before a holiday (and are often not needed on the trip). Most mothers spend the evening before the holiday, weeding out irrelevant trivials to make space for the essentials.

However, it’s often the moms who go overboard when packing a suitcase for an infant. The idea is to travel light, keeping only the stuff which is critical.

Travel With Kids: Expert Tip From The Parents

“If going on a self-drive holiday, pack in a car seat, stroller, diaper, diaper cream, wipes, change of clothes, plastic bags for soiled diapers and hand sanitiser,” says Kiran Mukul, a Gurgaon-based fashion and jewellery designer and also a certified meditation instructor.

She is mother to a 1.4-month-old baby girl and suggests carrying a nursing cover-up like a buttoned poncho for long trips. “Also, carry healthy snacks, a mix of new books and old favourites, small toys, inflatable baby tub, sunscreen, flash cards, baby bath products along, besides appropriate clothing to suit the weather at the destination” she says.
