Been everywhere and done everything in Europe? Visit Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, says Manish Bansal, “it’s a trip down the road less travelled!”

St. Anne’s Church and Church of St. Francis and Bernadine

I recently got back from an amazing trip to Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. Leave alone knowing the country, it took me a while to pronounce the name right! But it’s right up there in the Baltic region with Lativia and Estonia just a few hours drive away. Frankly speaking, I didn’t know what to expect on my visit to Vilnius, but to my surprise, it was the best part of my trip to Lithuania!

What to do and see in Lithuania

Hot air ballooning over Vilnius

Hot air ballooning is a must-do in Villnius, because it is the only place in the world where you can fly over a city!

Skiing and spas at Druskininkai

The biggest, indoor ice skiing drone in Europe is at Druskininkai (about 120 kms from Vilnius). It is a great place to learn and enjoy skiing indoors. Blessed with natural geysers and surrounded by excellent hotels, the spa town is only a 2 hrs drive, and you can indulge in all kinds of spa treatments.

Visit the old town of Trakai

27 kms from Vilnius, amidst forests, lakes and hills, is the town of Trakai. Along the shores of Lake Galve, Totoriškių and Lukos, is the legendary Trakai Castle, which was the 14th century cradle Lithuanian statehood, an important military and political centre, as well as the headquarters of the Lithuanian Grand Dukes.

Why you should travel to Vilnius

Lithuania is cheaper then rest of Europe, as they still operate on their local currency. The conversion rate is roughly 1 Lita to 24 Rupees.

The pretty, cobbled streets of Stikliu;

Great local beers! There are over 70 small local breweries, with some of the finest beers in Europe!

Vilnius has a great night life, with good clubs and fantastic eating-out options.

Town Hall;

If you crave Indian food, there’s an Indian restaurant in the heart of Vilnius.

Untouched and pristine, there are over 2000 natural lakes where you can swim all summer long!

The compact size of the place, makes travel in Lithuania, a breeze!

    Vilnius has a lot of history behind it. It was part of WWII, the Tsars, the Germans, the Russians, the Polish have ruled over it and the old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
