Vandana Sharma and her husband chose Cox & Kings’ Spanish Extravaganza to bring in their 4th wedding anniversary.

Here’s a first-hand account of her trip filled with Flamenco, football and a generous dose of mouthwatering local food…

The holiday in Spain is a trip I will keep with me forever

No, not the third wheel. That’s just one of the many friends we made on this awesome tour

Day 1

Arriving In Madrid

When we arrived in Madrid, the energetic capital of Spain, we were taken aback by the great weather, beautiful landscapes and breathtaking boulevards. I couldn’t take my eyes off the contemporary architecture that we passed on our way to the hotel. Once we checked in, with a hearty welcome from the Cox & Kings representatives, we just lazed around and grasped the lovely views from our hotel.

It was only at night that we experienced the real flavour of Spain, when we stepped into the Tablao Villa Rosa and spent an hour being awestruck by the sheer grace of the Flamenco dancers. They even got us to step on the dance floor and taught us a step or two. The music, the energy, the atmosphere, it was indefinable.

Day 2

Making The Most Of Madrid

In the morning, we set off by a private car to explore the city of Madrid. As we navigated through the bustling streets, I realized that the city is more alive than any other city I’ve been to and the Madrilenos are very passionate people. The Royal Palace, which belongs to the Spanish Royal Family was our first stop. Built impressively, the castle oozes of luxury. The rich collection of armoury and artworks instated inside gave us a good glimpse of history. Campo Del Moro and Sabatini gardens located behind the palace are excellently maintained.

Later, we walked down to the nearby Plaza de España, a large central square along the busy street of Gran Via. There was a monument of Miguel de Cervantes (the author of Don Quixote) in the middle of the square and it took me back to my earlier reading days. Here’s when I made a mental note to remove more time for reading.

Day 3

On To Valencia & The City Of Arts & Sciences

When we entered the vibrant port city of Valencia, dramatic coastlines and sweet Mediterranean breeze welcomed us. Amongst all the cultural attractions, the iconic City of Arts and Sciences attracts the most number of tourists. We were fascinated by the various aspects of science, technology, art and nature that were held within the massive boundaries of this city. The aquarium, Oceanografic, especially enchanted me, as I have always been drawn towards the marine animals.

Day 4

Tour Of Valencia

In the first half of the day, we took a hop-on/hop-off bus, and visited various sites of architectural magnificence. This included the Valencia Cathedral and El Miguelette Tower. I unleashed my desire for shopping (much to my husband’s dismay), at Mercado Central, the main market. In the evening, we just wanted to relax on the beach. It was soothing to see the waves crash against the sunset.

Day 5

On To Ibiza

We were really waiting for this part of the trip, as we had heard a lot about Ibiza being an entertainment hub with a superb nightlife. And true to what we had heard, we were engulfed by its beauty and choice of things to do. Our day was spent in exploring the resort and the island.

Day 6

Discovering The Beauty Of Peurto De San Miguel

We went for sightseeing to Puerto de San Miguel, a beautiful bay surrounded by cliffs. A short trip to the underground caverns of Cova De Can Marca revealed breathtaking views of the island. We had to actually pinch ourselves to believe we were here.

Day 7

On To Barcelona & La Rambla

This morning brought us to Barcelona, the Catalonian capital of Spain. Barcelona is pure love. We spent the day exploring the by lanes of La Rambla, walking into quirky shops and trying Spanish delicacies at tapas bars. It was a day that I would love to live every day.

Day 8

Exploring Barcelona & Camp Nou

We took a tour of the city’s famous spots including Sagrada Familia, Olympic Village and Montjuic Mountains. The Roman Catholic Church of Sagrada Familia, although still under construction, reminded me of a castle from fairytales. It was a sight to behold.

We had deliberately planned for half of our day to be free, so that we could explore Camp Nou, the home of FC Barcelona. My husband, being a huge fan of football, was in awe of the stadium. In fact, he’s added ‘watching a live match at Camp Nou’ to his bucket list.

Day 9

The Goodbye

Our trip to Viva de la españa was finally coming to end. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves in these 9 days and I must say that a visit to Spain, at least once in this lifetime, just has to be on everyone’s list.
