On June 1st 2015, Iceland will welcome the world to Langjökull Ice Cave!

Entrance to the Ice Cave

Entrance to the Ice Cave

The construction of this ice getaway started in 2010, after the idea was initiated by Hallgrimur Orn Arngrimsson and Baldvin Einarsson. The endeavor behind the cave was to let people have the unique experience of being surrounded by ice, and to let them witness the magnificent shades of blue, a result of ice buried beneath the surface of the glacier.

After 4 years of construction, this dream structure now stretches half a mile in length, and reaches the glacier’s deepest point.

Travel operators are offering people a chance to travel 2,500 ft into Langjökull Glacier, where they can explore this fascinating ice cave. The four hour tour starts with a ride up the glacier in a monster truck, which then takes visitors through the manmade structure, along with various smaller chambers and caves. LED lights have been used to help guide the way, and also to enhance the visual appeal of the already stunning “blue ice”.

In addition to being a tourist attraction, the cave will also be used by students and researchers at the University of Iceland to track the movement of ice over time.

Arrangements for renting out ice chambers for parties, and the chapel for weddings have also been made.
