luggage conveyer belt at airport

The 10th Annual SITA Baggage Report revealed that in 2013 the airline baggage mishandling rate dropped by 21.2%.

The main cause for delayed baggage is said to be when baggage handlers make errors while transferring bags from one airplane to another.

In 2013 the cost to airlines to find, deliver or replace mishandled baggage was $US2.09 billion which was 20% less than 2012.

Improvements in transfer performance has been helped by greater messaging reliability, which enables bags with short connection times to be identified before they arrive at the airport. Besides that, better segregation of bags in the aircraft and smart mobile devices, like tablets for key operational staff, has also helped to keep mishandling rates down.

Airlines are very optimistic and most expect that by the end of 2016 they will be able to provide luggage location updates and allow travellers to file missing baggage reports via smartphones.

Interesting facts about lost baggage
