3 Myths About The Maldives, Busted!

“It’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey.” Quite a well known saying, albeit, not something everyone agrees with.

Kurumba Maldives, a private island resort

Of all the family-friendly destinations in the world, Chaitali Mehendale had always dreamed of visiting the Maldives. But the cozy tropical nation of several hundred coral islands seemed out of bounds for several reasons. Its halcyon blue waters were meant for swimmers, it was too far for a flight with her son in tow, and most importantly, it was a couples destination. Much to her delight, none of that was true. Read on to see how Chaitali and her family enjoyed their stay in the Maldives. Plus, she got more than enough time with her husband. Alone!

I’ve always wanted to go to the Maldives. But when I began to chalk out my plan, I was discouraged by people who said things like, “What will you do there? You can’t swim?”, “How will you and Sanjay get time together with Rohan in tow?” “Won’t Rohan get bored?”…

Initially, it dampened my spirits, but my love for this familiar, yet unfamiliar place was too strong to be affected by what they said. I had saved up for a while to be able to afford this vacation with my family. Go there I did. And along the way I discovered that a lot of what they say about the Maldives, is a myth.

Myth #1: The Maldives Is Only For Swimmers

While you do need to know the basics of how to swim and float for scuba diving, snorkeling is an entirely different ballgame. There is no excuse to deprive yourself of the chance to view the enchanting world of coral reefs. Delightedly I realised that my son is as much a water baby as I am! The marine life in the Maldives is absolutely stunning, and boasts of manta rays, sharks, whales, dolphins, sea turtles, and colourful coral.

Tip #1

Make sure the resort you choose has activities for non-swimmers. Some resorts even offer basic swimming lessons.

Myth #2: The Maldives Is Not A Family-Friendly Destination

When my friends found out that our son, Rohan, was to join us on the trip to Kurumba Maldives, an island resort, they were like, “How unromantic!”. The Maldives is not exactly popular for being a family destination. It’s where a lot of couples go for their honeymoon, or to bond and take time off from the daily intrusions back home.

The idea that my husband and I would be busy dealing with our son on a luxury holiday, instead of spending quality time as a couple, had some grounds. But this apprehension was silenced by ‘The Majaa Kids’ Club’ at Kurumba, which is a club for children aged 4-12 years that operates from 9 AM to 6 PM.

Not only do they have highly engaging child-proof toys and video games, but also a range of fun-filled activities, like sand castle building, kite making and flying, and cookie making. The resort also has two kiddy pools. That left my husband and I with enough time for each other, the sun, and the pristine waters.

Tip #2

Do your thorough research and make sure you put yourself and your family up at a place where there is something for everyone.

Myth #3: Flights With Long Stopovers Are A Nightmare For Parents

Although connecting flights are lighter on the pocket, you may feel like you are paying a heavier price while attending to your tantrum-throwing-sugar-rush-induced child. The very thought of keeping Rohan amused and entertained on a connecting flight from Mumbai-Colombo-Male with a stop over of more than 6 hours did make me jittery at first. Thankfully, Sri Lankan airlines provided us with enough entertainment and a kiddie kit that came with colours and a puzzle to keep Rohan engrossed.

Tip #3

An idle mind is a devil’s workshop. So channel all of your child’s ready-to-burst energy into something productive before it eats into your holiday thrills. And make sure to pack an extra set of clothes into your hand luggage for the entire family because spills and accidents are inevitable.
