The Intriguing Discovery

Long, long ago, in the year 1240, a pilgrim looking for a monastery in the old town of Pfafers discovered thermal springs gushing from a narrow abyss called Tamina Gorge, and took a relaxing dip in it. Soon, it became a resting& bathing spot in Pfafers for all the pilgrims visiting the monastery.The boulders of this gorge had turned into hot tubs and people would often prolong their leisurely stay here.

Later, in 1535, Paracelsus, the noted philosopher and physician, found that the thermal water has several healing properties.Soon the word spread and people travelled long distances for the healing springs, in quest of physical and mental well being.

In 1716, the first ever bathhouse featuring baroque architecture in Switzerland was built beneath the Benedictine Monastery, Pfafers.

Circa 1840, a 4km-long channel was created to draw the hot springs to the more proximate village of Ragaz. And in a few years began the construction of the most magnificent spa resort ever, which enticed rich travellers, especially the Russian aristocrats. Even now, it continues to attract travellers from all around the world.
