Why I Would Choose Cox & Kings and the G Adventures Tour – By GYD Season 2 Winner, Roxanne Bamboat
Roxanne Bamboat, a.k.a the Tiny Taster, knew she was in for a party when it was declared that she’d be heading to Europe to Grab Her Dream! However, the ‘Travel Princess’ as she calls herself, did not know that this YOLO (You Live Only Once) trip was a backpackers delight – And backpack, she just does not! So, what next? Here she tells us exactly what happened.
Nothing excites me more than the thought of travelling to a new place and exploring it. When I heard I won the Grab Your Dream contest and a free trip with Cox & Kings and G Adventures, I was ecstatic! Needless to the say, the minute I found out, I was going trotting across Europe, I thought I would literally combust with excitement. I’m positive the entire Cox & Kings team thought I was certifiably insane! While there was much excitement about my trip, I’d be foolish to disregard the small amounts of anxiety I felt.
“I Do NOT Backpack. I Just Don’t!”
As a blogger or travel writer you tend to get used to a certain style of travel, be it adventure or backpacking. As much as I love meeting new people, I haven’t travelled with strangers for weeks at a stretch, in a while. I have also gotten use to a certain comfort with regard to the hotels I choose while I travel, and this trip, from the very start, was hell bent on taking me out of my comfort zone.
G Adventures has different types of tours and the one I was allotted is called YOLO (You Live Only Once) and is best described as a backpackers delight. My first thought was I’m too old for this as I don’t think I’ve ever uttered the words YOLO nor will I ever, unless it is to describe this particular trip. The second thought was, I do not backpack. I just don’t! The idea of carrying all my belongings crumpled in a bag on my shoulder is about as exciting as pulling my teeth at the dentist. I suppose you can tell by now I was feeling drastically different emotions about my trip. On one hand the excitement of new destinations and things I will discover, and on the other hand, the sheer dread of the type of vacation this was to be.
“I Learned A Lot About Myself On This Trip!”
While I paint this very bleak picture, let me assure you that I am an over thinker with a strong flare for the dramatic. Yes, I absolutely struggled with the luggage department. I feel it will take me another ten trips till I get the hang of how to pack without taking my entire house with me. Apart from that, I stayed in hostel dorms that would rival most three or four star hotels, walked till my toes were ready to fall off my feet, but with all that walking got to experience each city in its purest truest form. And last but not least, got to meet the most fantastic set of people I have ever had the privilege of meeting! It was a trip where some friendships that were forged earlier, were cemented in Europe and will last a lifetime!
I think more than anything, this trip ended up being one where I learnt more about myself than I have on any of my travels! I learnt to be patient; something I need to be taught time and time again. I learnt to be grateful because let’s be honest, it isn’t everyday you get the trip of your dreams just fall into your lap. I had to pinch myself and say thank you in every city I was in.
Most importantly I learnt I can pretty much do anything. While I like to think I’m a bit of a travel princess and enjoy the frills and comfort, if I want to I can sleep on a mat or in a room with six other people. After a point it really doesn’t matter.
“Will I Do Another G Adventures Trip? Yes, I Will!”
The way I personally gauge if I have enjoyed myself, is by asking if I will repeat the experience. Will I go back to Europe to the exact same countries and city? Of course I will! Will I do another G Adventures trip to Europe or any other destination? Surprisingly, yes I will! I will go on another adventure for a multitude of reasons, but the most important ones are the new people I will meet and the guide or who they call the CEO, because I had one who went above and beyond to ensure that I not only had a safe trip, but a happy one along with plenty of information (which by the way is not his job description)!
